You're Invited To An Art Party

Technically it's the second event we've held in VR, ever

an impressionist painting of a barmaid (woman in a dark dress with a mirror behind her)

Well, it's not actually a party, but it is a big event.

For a while, I've been studying various ways of transmitting what I see in VR to physical canvas. My work is part of a larger picture of creative activity in the immersive community, though, and I think it's time we give this simultaneous activity an official name. Some people like the name "Gridism", while other artists I've talked to would rather choose a new title. And I don't blame them--we all deserve a say on that subject!

And there's only one way to solve that:

a poster that says "ART IN VR" at the top, followed by an image of a virtual headset next to a painting under a tree. below this is text: "Art in virtual reality is experiencing a renaissance. Learn how to get involved or expand your current practice, be it drawing, painting, sculpting, or photography. This meeting will also discuss what to name the art movement as a whole. All attendees are welcome to suggest a name to determine the movement's future. / SATURDAY AUG 3rd / 1pm PST / 4pm EST / 9pm BST / STRANGE PEAR GALLERY / VRC Group: PEAR.7859"

It's time for an official meeting!

Art in VR is experiencing a renaissance. Learn how to get involved, and discuss what we should name this burgeoning movement to determine its future.

SATURDAY AUG 3rd
1 PM PST / 4 PM EST / 9 PM BST
STRANGE PEAR GALLERY
VRC group to attend: https://vrchat.com/home/group/grp_36750235-eb7f-418b-981a-643309a68bf7

I will give a short talk about various types of fine art happening in VR now and show off some footage from my own painting experiments. Then, we'll open the floor to accept genre name suggestions from anyone attending. Afterwards, a public poll will be released so the entire VR community can put the issue to vote. In a week's time, we'll release the results with our official name.

If you don't have a VRChat account, you can download the program through Steam (the gallery we're meeting at is PC only due to how much art is on the map). When you're registered, click on the group link above and join it. There should be an announcement through the Strange Pear VRC group on Saturday when the event officially opens. Through the group, you should be able to join the event.

Until then, please enjoy this interview of me speaking with Kent Bye a few years ago about cultural activity in VR. I owe a million to Kent for his advice and guidance over the years, and am honored to be featured on Voices of VR.

See you at the party! If you can't make it, I'll be recording a video of the meeting to post later with the poll link.
